Whether east, south or west, the American coastline offers an immense variety of coastal landscapes, but not all of them are necessarily suitable for swimming. Discover our top of the best beaches in the USA and when to go there to enjoy them at the right time.
Langdon Beach Florida
The Pensacola sector in Florida is not located on the ultra-touristy tip of the state (Miami, for example), but on the “panhandle”, the western end, bordering Alabama and Louisiana. The very lively beaches of Pensacola are filled with people in summer (almost exclusively Americans, few foreign tourists) and to appreciate all the wild beauty of the area, head to Langdon Beach.
Calm and sometimes deserted, this largely unspoiled beach is appreciated by those who enjoy solitary walks. Others bask in the sun away from all the hustle and bustle of other, busier beaches, and some sit on the sand to meditate or watch the many colonies of birds. May and June are the best two months of the year, before the humid summer heat and hurricane season (June through November, peaking in September).
Stinson Beach California
While most tourists are familiar with California's most famous beaches like Venice Beach, Laguna Beach and Malibu, few know where to find all the wild splendor of the coast. Step away for a moment to experience the natural charm of Stinson Beach. The beach benefits from beautiful mild weather conditions that are almost always sunny, more or less all year round.
Only downside common to the entire Californian coast, the appearances of sharks near the beaches, from time to time. Fine sand, dark blue water, nearby mountains and wildlife (great blue herons and seals are the stars of the place) make Stinson Beach all the appeal.
Cannon Beach in Oregon.
Cannon Beach is known as the beach where the forest meets the ocean. The very shiny sand makes the Pacific Ocean sparkle, so much so that the landscape could look like a painting.
The beach is also famous for its impressive pile of rocks, as if stranded on the beach: Haystack rock culminates at 72 meters in height and teems with animal life: bird's nests, starfish, shells and sea slugs. Prefer a stay in the heart of summer to bask in warm, but not stifling weather: 22°C on average in July-August accompanied by a constant breeze.
North Shore Oahu (Honolulu) to Hawaii
To be absolutely certain of a successful American stay at the beach, head to the paradise of Hawaii, a small archipelago adored by film and series producers for its otherworldly landscapes (LOST, Jurassic Park, etc.).
The archipelago brings together the best surf spots in the world, like the north coast of Oahu and its raging waves. Mecca of the biggest surfing competitions, the coast also attracts the uninitiated who simply take pleasure in admiring this tumultuous ocean: the biggest waves occur from November to February and can rise up to 10 meters. Those who wish to swim without risking their lives too much will prefer a stay in July-August.
A few kilometers from the surf spots, swimming spots allow less sporty tourists other thrills, such as the chance to swim with dolphins.
