The most beautiful Moroccan city for travel

In the heart of the Souss valley, between the High Atlas and the Anti-Atlas, stand the ramparts of Taroudant. Former capital of the Saadians, Taroudant was also an important caravan center, famous for the abundance and quality of its goods, which attracted the covetousness of many invaders.

 Surrounded by its thick ramparts with 130 towers, the "little Marrakech" as it is nicknamed, is one of the most beautiful cities in southern Morocco. Taroudant has managed to preserve a traditional atmosphere in its souks and medina.

In Taroudant, you have to go around the ramparts that surround the medina to discover the nine gates of the city. The oldest and most important by its dimensions and its location is the door of "the Kasbah". Seven kilometers long, the ramparts are accompanied by huge gardens planted with giant olive trees, eucalyptus, palm trees and pomegranate trees.

Known for its ramparts, Taroudant is also known for its souks and its market. 70 km east of Agadir, the city offers a typical Berber market that has kept its authenticity. Spices and ceramics rub shoulders with Berber crafts and jewelry.

In the old town, the western end of the city near the Bâb Targhount gate, is home to the tanneries of Taroudant, renowned for the quality of their leather. While the Kasbah occupies the northeast part of the city.

Excursions around Taroudant

25km from Taroudant, the village of Tioute perched on a peak overlooks a pretty palm grove. Nicknamed the "garden of delights", the oasis of Tiout is a marvel of freshness and light. A veritable maze of colors at the foot of the kasbah. Along the irrigation canals (seguias), orange trees, date palms, pomegranate trees and carob trees grow. Beautiful mule rides are possible.

In the direction of Ouarzazate, discover the Jebel Siroua, at the crossroads of the roads of Zagora, Marrakech and the Dades Valley. Siroua is dotted with fortified villages surrounded by saffron fields.

Go hiking to discover the Berber culture in the villages of Tamazirt, Aït Ighmour, Ait Tigga, Tizgui and Tislit. You will fall under the spell of this secret and preserved land. The Siroua massif offers endless hiking possibilities, in a setting of volcanic landscapes unique in Morocco.

Access and practical information

The nearest airport is Agadir. From there you can rent a car to go to Taroudant and the Anti-Atlas mountains, or the wild landscapes of the Atlantic coast.

By car from Marrakech, count around 4 hours drive. To reach Taroudant by the Tizi NTest road. From Taroudant you can go to Siroua and Ouarzazate, or to Agadir and the Atlantic coast

Taroudant is located 70km east of Agadir, about a hundred kilometers from Tafraout. To get there, take the collective taxis at Bâb Zorgane, or the buses from the bus station.
